In the UK in particular, decking has a poor reputation. We've all seen it, decking coated green with algae, poorly constructed and left to rot rendered completely unusable.

However with proper forethought and consideration decks can stand the test of time and continue give years of service whilst looking great throughout.

Regulations

Decking does not require planning permission when under 300mm from ground height and if it does not exceed 50% of the garden area in coverage.

Choosing your decking. Timber or Composite?

A treated softwood decks tend to be the most affordable option and can look and perform great, however they will need regular maintenance to maximize their lifespan.

Hardwood decks such as 'yellow balau' give a luxury and highly durable finish, though regular oiling is required to keep the material looking its best .

Composite decking, a manufactured product made from recycled plastic and wood fibre, has both increased in quality and affordability over the past few year, particularly as Chinese imports have come to the UK market. Although still more expensive than softwood alternatives its resistance to rot, splitting and decay made it an increasingly popular option.

What's underneath? The frame

Ensuring that the frame is properly constructed, with airflow and is suitable supported is key to the performance and longevity of your deck. We ensure our decks conform to at least industry body recommendations and include features such as an impermeable decking tape on joists and stainless steel bolts on supports to further improve longevity.

As composite decking has become more popular so to have composite frames with many homeowners seeing the value in opting for a frame that will match the longevity of the surface material. Composite frames require specific methods of installation and having completed a large variety successful large projects its something that we are proud to specialize in.
